Client Overview

Tomson (Buxton) Ltd is a major supplier of fresh fruit and vegetables across Derbyshire and the Peak District.

The family-owned and run business was set up by Malcolm and Debby Thompson in 1986, when they bought a fruit and veg shop in Buxton.

Tomson has gone from being a small fruit and veg store on the high street to a large wholesaler, supplying much more than just fruit and vegetables. Its range covers cheese and dairy, dried goods, and locally-sourced bottled drinks and other artisan produce.

As the business grew, so did its premises and staff, from just two drivers to a valued team of more than 30.

In 2006, Tomson moved to its current site on the Rockhead Business Park, Buxton and in 2017, its warehousing facilities were extended to accommodate a bigger stock holding, on the back of a growth in business.

Over the past ten years, the company has diversified from being a secondary fruit and vegetable wholesaler to a primary importer with contacts across the UK and Europe.

Our Work

It approached PCPM following an energy efficiency audit, with a view to upgrading its large chilled storage system, which it requires to keep all its produce fresh and in tip-top condition.

Its requirements included improved energy efficiency and use of a more up-to-date, environmentally-friendly refrigerant.

After a site survey, PCPM specified chilled storage equipment from the Danfoss range, which is on the Government’s Energy Technology List.

The ETL is part of the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme, which allows businesses to write off the cost of approved new energy-efficient plant or machinery against its taxable profits in the financial year the purchase was made.

The Outcome

Along with the new refrigeration system, an insulated door curtain was fitted to improve temperature control during busy periods, when the large sliding door is open, which can lead to rapid fluctuations in temperature and a less-effective cooling environment.

Tomson was able to access a grant of 50% of the replacement cost of their old chiller through the D2 Energy Efficiency Project.

"PCPM visited site and picked up the project from the start, and ensured that the equipment and installation complied with the requirements for EU funding assistance.

PCPM managed the whole project from start to finish to ensure it went as smoothly as possible and we are delighted with the results."
